This year is a special one for all of us at Inyati. It marks 40 years since we first welcomed guests to the banks of the Sand River in 1986.
A lot has happened in those four decades. There have been more game drives than we could count, some incredible wildlife sightings and many evenings spent swapping stories around the fire. We’ve watched guests become friends and welcomed familiar faces back year after year.
It also felt like the right time to give the lodge a refresh.
The idea was never to change Inyati completely. We wanted to make the rooms and shared spaces feel lighter and fresher, while keeping the relaxed, intimate feel that has always been part of the lodge.
Taking Our Cue from the Bush
We worked with interior designer Almi Prinsloo of Amalia Interiors, who drew inspiration from the landscape around Inyati.
The Sand River, the earthy textures of the bushveld and the colours that change with the seasons all influenced the new interiors. Throughout the rooms, warm, natural tones are paired with linen, textured cotton, leather, woven grasses and timber.
Woven grass wallpaper brings some of the texture of the bush indoors, while a sliding door adjoining the bathroom can be opened to let in natural light, fresh air and all the familiar sounds outside.
We’ve also added private outdoor showers, giving guests another chance to enjoy being out in the bush – without having to leave their room.
Our Favourite Watering Hole
The guest lounge has been given new life too.
This has always been one of the social hubs of Inyati. It’s where everyone tends to end up after a game drive, usually with plenty to talk about after a few hours out in the bush.
We like to think of it as the lodge’s own “watering hole” – a place for coffee in the morning, a sundowner later in the day and plenty of conversation in between.
There’s now a new coffee station serving locally sourced brews, a refreshed bar area and a reworked fireplace to gather around as the evening settles in. The space may look different, but we’re happy to say it still does what it has always done best: bring people together.
Looking Back on 40 Years
We could fill pages with wildlife encounters from over the years, from memorable leopard sightings to elephants passing through the river in front of the lodge. But when we think about Inyati’s story, it’s the people who stand out just as much.
Our guides and trackers have spent years getting to know this part of the Sabi Sand, reading tracks and sharing their knowledge with guests. Many members of our team have built long careers here, and we’ve been lucky enough to welcome guests who have returned to Inyati time and again – often becoming friends along the way.
That’s a lot of shared history for a small lodge of just 11 chalets. While much has changed over the years, there is something reassuring about how much hasn’t.
Some Things Don’t Change
We’re very happy with Inyati’s new look, and we hope our guests will be too.
But for all the changes around the lodge, the things that matter to us haven’t gone anywhere. There are still early mornings out in the bush, stories to share when everyone gets back, familiar faces around the lodge and the Sand River flowing past beyond it.
After 40 years, that still feels very much like Inyati.
